ProFTP through router

I have tried setting up my linux box so I can ftp to it from work however I already have an ftp server running on port 21. I changed the default port in proftpd.conf to 8021 and set up my router to forward that port to the linux box. When I try to connect from outside I can connect and login but as soon as I issue an ls I get:

200 PORT command successful

and nothing else. It just sits there until it times out.

I can access it fine from behind the router though.

Any ideas?

You also need to open up port 20 I believe. FTP uses a second port for transfer of information (like directory listings, file transfers, etc).

Right now I have everything from port 8000 to 8999 forwarded to the linux box from the router and I don't see anything in proftpd.conf regarding ports other than the main port assignment.

whatever port you have it to use in the proftpd.conf
is the port you have to setup for forwarding in your
router configuration .. typically it is port 21 ...
