Question proftp & gproftp installtion....

I think I just installed proftp and gproftp for the graphic part but can not find it, or can nto see that it is loaded.......
I can see the proftpd.conf file in the etc but that is about it..
I followed these steps and everythign seemed to have gone throgh with no errors:

Download proftpd >= 1.2.9 from www.proftpd.org and unpack it like this:
tar -zxvf proftpd-x.x.x.tar.gz then cd into that directory and type:
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --sbindir=/usr/sbin
make
make install

Add --with-modules=mod_tls to the configure line if you want to use FTP-TLS secure communications.
Both regular FTP and FTP-TLS can be used at the same time.

If there are no errors youre ready to install gproftpd wich can be done like this:

Download gproftpd >= 8.1.6 and unpack it like this:
tar -zxvf gproftpd-x.x.x.tar.gz
CD into that directory then run the AutoInstall script (if you like the settings in it).

Now you should be able to start it by typing gproftpd at a shellprompt or
from GNOME or KDE's program menus and youre ready to add some users.

If you compiled proftpd from sources and you want to use the gproftpd rpm, do this:
rpm -ivh --force --nodeps gproftpd*.rpm

If you didnt configure proftpd using --sysconfdir=/etc and want proftpd to start when the system starts
you need to specify where the configuration file is located like this:
proftpd -c /etc/proftpd.conf in the startup file otherwise
it might be started using the example configuration which can be a security risk.

Bottom line, how do I start this or configire this now???

edit /etc/proftpd.conf with your favorite editor.

Once that's done, in a shell do...

"proftpd"

If you want to make sure it's running you can do a number of things:

1. ftp localhost
2. nmap localhost
3. netstat -a
4. ps -ax | grep proftpd

All will let you know. If you get errors though, please post the errors with your next post.

Well at the first step it complains as follow: (This is once I've typed "proftp at the command......
Name or service not known
unable to determine IP address of 'Unspecified'
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - getaddrinfo 'Unspecified' error: Name or service not known
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - warning: unable to determine IP address of 'Unspecified'

Is there a basic configuration I can copy and just change the user accoutn and IP's???

you have to add your ips to /etc/hosts ... like my hostname is "slappy"

So...

my /etc/hosts file looks like..

#############
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 slappy.slappy slappy

#############
