processes that refuse to die... HELP!

how do i kill processes that refuse to die....
i accidentilly tried mounting an empty cdrom... and instead of getting a 'medium not found...' eror, usually when a process refuses to die i end up having to reboot to get rid of it, is there any better way?
ps. i've tried top, kpm
kill -1 pid
kill -2 pid
kill -3 pid
kill -4 pid
nothing wokred!
what should i do? i hate rebooting, it screwes up my uptimes!

kill -9 pid

But you must be the owner of the process.

That can happen, such processes are called zombies; there is even some
way to determine if a process has become a zombie, some I option in
ps if I remember correctly. But it should be the case rarely (call yourself
lucky guy if you encounter this ;-))
