Problems with X - Once I go into a blank window I can't get out...

Hi guys and girls,

I've recently installed SimplyMEPIS to my local box and am very happy with it .

I've had one problem with it though, which I believe is X related.

I know how to open a new X "window" and put it into the Ctrl + Alt + F8 slot. Works fine . And I know how to close it with Ctrl + Alt + Backspacee, works fine also. However, if I hit Ctrl + Alt + F8 (or F9, F10) when there's no X open there, all I get is a black screen with a blinking underscore.

I've tried going back to Ctrl + Alt + F7 (I know the session is still running, as people have told me I'm still connected to irc until I reset my PC), I've tried hitting Ctrl + Alt + Backspace - nothing. I can avoid the problem by simply not going into new windows that don't exist, but I'm a bit forgetful sometimes, and I'll probably end up doing it anyway. And when I do, I'll have to reset, which is most annoying.

Any ideas? . I'm willing to test things out :P.

Thanks gang,

ctl+alt+f7 should bring you back to your first session. ctl+alt+backspace just kills X. On my suse boxes and most *nix I have had contact with alt+ctl+(f1-f6) cycles through the terminals and f7-f12 is the where X is viewed. Hope that helps.

Well like I said, I have tried moving back to the F7 one, and to the terminal windows, but no to avail.

I'm too scared to even go look at my other windows now :S.
