Problems with VLC Player constantly shutting off on its own!
Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me out. I am using openSUSE 11.1 64 bit, and I downloaded VLC player, but every time I start the program it shuts off immediately! Could it be that im using compiz or something else?
I used the one-click install from pack man website. I am still really new to linux, so if you have a website that can teach me advanced techniques like that I would be grateful!
Ok, most modern linux distros allow you to install software using what are known as package management tools. In ubuntu you have synaptic, in fedora you have yum.
So far as I know, in SUSE you have yast, so take a look around the menus for that.
Basically your problem is that there is other software that VLC depends on, but you haven't installed. Had you installed VLC using yast, yast would have taken care of those software dependencies by checking what software VLC requires, then making sure you have it installed. If you don't have it installed, yast downloads it and installs it.

many of us have broken our installs by trying to compile and run software ourselves. Personally, I like that I can read the source if I want, but I prefer to install pre-compiled software from ubuntus software repositories using synaptic. That way, I know the software will work. It also takes far less time. Compiling software is often a long, laborious process.
We all learn by doing, so if you want to try compiling your own software, I suggest getting an old machine, installing something like slackware on it, and having fun with it. Don't do it on your main machine until you know what you're doing!
