Problems with VLC Player constantly shutting off on its own!

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me out. I am using openSUSE 11.1 64 bit, and I downloaded VLC player, but every time I start the program it shuts off immediately! Could it be that im using compiz or something else?

Try running VLC from the command line:
Code:

vlc
and post the output that comes up in the command line.

it seems to work through the terminal but if I right click a file and say to open with vlc player it closes automatically!

jdkaye 05-25-2009 12:31 PM

Try running
Code:

vlc {name of video file}
using the same file that wouldn't work when you right-clicked on it. That should give you more information about what the problem is.
Cheers,
jdk

Did you compile VLC yourself? Is it possible to download a suitable RPM for OpenSUSE?

mag1strate 05-28-2009 09:14 AM

I used the one-click install from pack man website. I am still really new to linux, so if you have a website that can teach me advanced techniques like that I would be grateful!

irishbitte 05-28-2009 04:07 PM

Ok, most modern linux distros allow you to install software using what are known as package management tools. In ubuntu you have synaptic, in fedora you have yum.

So far as I know, in SUSE you have yast, so take a look around the menus for that.

Basically your problem is that there is other software that VLC depends on, but you haven't installed. Had you installed VLC using yast, yast would have taken care of those software dependencies by checking what software VLC requires, then making sure you have it installed. If you don't have it installed, yast downloads it and installs it.

many of us have broken our installs by trying to compile and run software ourselves. Personally, I like that I can read the source if I want, but I prefer to install pre-compiled software from ubuntus software repositories using synaptic. That way, I know the software will work. It also takes far less time. Compiling software is often a long, laborious process.

We all learn by doing, so if you want to try compiling your own software, I suggest getting an old machine, installing something like slackware on it, and having fun with it. Don't do it on your main machine until you know what you're doing!

This link will give you some idea of what is involved, though it is technical and ubuntu centred: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingSoftware
