problems with Ubuntu 16.04.1 software center

Hi, I recently installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 and note there have been some pkgs that seem to be broken:
The "Ubuntu Software Centre not only does not work as before but seems not to function at all. Trying to install from it fails. There is a supposed fix for it in terminal: sudo-apt-get install gdebi. This pkg also seems to be broken as when one tries to use it , although it opens, the page is blank and will not receive any commands.
Re-installing the Ubuntu software centre does not help and in trying to re-name or load alternatively the Gnome software centre, there is also no results.

Hi...

Concerning the issue of broken packages, do the any of the suggestions mentioned here or here help at all? :)

if you can't get something to work, that doesn't mean it's broken.

i don't know about software center, but gdebi definitely won't "fix" your problems.
i think the commands outlined inthe links from the previous post are a good start.
make note of the output and post it here in case that doesn't help.

The key word here is "seems" I'm not suggesting that the pkgs are definitely broken but for what ever reason they don't work. As for how I've gotten around the problems mentioned, I use the Synaptic Pkg Mgr, it works fine and even in the past years I have resorted to using it frequently. I don't know at this point why upgrading to 16.04 as opposed to a fresh install from a disc seems to be a bit flaky but the latter method works fine.
I am quite well aware that skipping a Vsn means you either have to back up all your files or you will lose them. As for the Ubuntu software centre, it worked well up to 14.04, but after that it doesn't see to work. I am also aware that there is talk of dumping the U.S.C. due apparently to some problems with 3rd party software. I can't say more than that as I am not informed further. So far I have not been able to get it working even with the suggested "fixes" I was told you could change the name to "Gnome Software" but have had no success in doing that.
Overall 16.04 still performs well and I'd take it over Microsoft any day! (P.T.L. Ardvark, thanks for your assistance) Tukatz

Hi...

You mentioned you tried to install gdebi. Can you post the results from...

Code:

sudo apt install gdebi
Disclaimer: Be careful with these commands. Ones that are prefaced with "su" or "sudo" will essentially allow root access to your system. Mistakes could possibly damage or even destroy your OS. ;)

Almost forgot...try the solution mentioned here for Gnome software. :)

Hi Ardvark, I tried the latest solution you've fwd'd but with no apparent improvement. ( I did get a pop-up with warnings and cautions etc.Too much to fwd) The software Ctr. is there and you can install pkgs if you click on specific ones but if you try searching for instance for "fonts" or any other software it says "No application found"
It used to be that if you wanted to check on something such as what fonts you had installed or ones you might want you could search for them and a list would show up indicating ones installed and not installed and you could either install or uninstall from there. It's not a problem now for me as I found I could use "Font Mgr" but for friends who use Ubuntu but are not tech savvy it presents them with the problem of not knowing how to use a more complicated method such as the synaptic... Not a problem for me, I got where I am by taking the bull by it's horns so to speak.
At any rate, My system is functioning well otherwise. Thanks for trying, Blessings, Tukatz
