problems with .mov file extension

hi, i know this isnt directly a linux question but i know how good this website is ;) so i thought i would try it!
ive got a film with the file extension .mov (which i belive is quicktime's extension as it will only play in quicktime!) does anyone know of a way to convert it to avi or a way to play it on all players ?

You can play it with mplayer, which is the swiss army knife of media players for linux.

The easiest way to install mplayer on fedora/redhat is to use yum.

Update /etc/yum.conf so it has loads of decent repositories in it, then as root do "yum install mplayer"

You can play .mov with just about any player if you get the codecs from
Mplayer.hu. Get them all, win32, qt6, qtextras, and rp9codecs.
Create the directory, /usr/lib/win32 And put the win32 and all qt codecs
in there. Put the rp9codecs anywhere and tell your player where they are.

Yes. But you can stay with apt-get, as there is an apt repository with MPlayer (not to mention it's official and has MPlayer's devs blessing ;) ). See my sig.
