Problems with KDE 3.2 and SuSE 9.0

I've a few problems with KDE 3.2 I can't work out. The konsole for any user apart from root is blank apart from a blinking square. Trying to run KDESU Konsole gives me a path cannot be found error.
Xcursor works at the login screen (both kdm and gdm) but not on the KDE desktop as soon as you click to logout xcursor comes back to life, xcursor works fine in Gnome. None of my online games run any more they produce "cannot open X display and exit with a Glimb init could not load OpenGL subsystem other OpenGL games run fine. Log in as root all these problems vanish apart from the xcursor. I have made my user a member of root group that didn't work I have tried sudo with group wheel that doesn't work. I know it must be a permission problem but where.

Do you recall what you did just pror to this problem poping up?
I mean, since your install of SuSE9, did the KDE ever work properly? Or was there some significant change on the system?

Also, if any change was made via KDE, was it done via root access or regular user?

I just installed KDE 3.2 rc1 (3.1.95-0). I collected all the rpms from SuSE burnt them to a disk rebooted into safe mode logged in as root then mounted the disk and used the "rpm -Uvh *.rpm --test" command which came up with no conflicts so I ran "rpm -Uvh *.rpm" I did notice that during the kdelibs and kdebase install part SuSEconfig was run accessing permissions and security . The only other question mark was cannot find user "abuild" using "root".
