Problems with HEVC/x265 videos

I have an HEVC/x265 video that mplayer cannot reproduce. I get no video, just audio, although the audio is perfect. And ffplay can reproduce it, but the audio is garbled.

Since mplayer has so many options I will never know them all, I am wondering if there is any way that I can configure it to use ffmpeg to handle just the video and take care of the audio itself. Is that possible? I checked the manual and didn't find it, but who knows...

Have you tried MPV? I believe mplayer development has slowed down.

mplayer is OK, mplayer2 has issues, mpv is OK.

I use smplayer as the front end and either mplayer or mpv as the instrument...

FWIW, mplayer does not work. It just spews this error endlessly:

s3fb: Not enough video memory to play this movie. Try at a lower resolution
FATAL: Cannot initialize video driver.
Too many buffered pts
Movie-Aspect is 2.22:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
VO: [s3fb] 1920x864 => 1920x864 Packed YUY2
mplayer2 reproduces audio only.

I had never heard of mpv. I installed it and it works, audio and video are perfect. There is only one minor glitch: it is an mkv video that contains embedded subtitles. ffplay reproduces audio (though garbled), video and subtitles. They are embedded, there is no external *.srt file or anything at all. The video file is absolutely single in its own directory. mpv does not display the subtitles. I read the manual, found the controls, but they don't seem to have any effect. Any ideas about that?
