problems with fonts after updating to x.org 6.9.0

hi

slapt-get (the slackware package auto-update tool) recently updated my x.org version from 6.8.2 to 6.9.0 using official packages. This was obviously fine and I had been meaning to get hold of the packages for 6.9.0 or compile it at some point anyway. However, I ran into two significant problems upon restarting X and using the new libraries.

Firstly, switching of virtual desktops under Gnome was seriously slowed down and jerky to the point of being very irritating.

and second, it had completely changed my font settings, causing the smaller sizes to look blocky and (as I heard someone describe them once) "crumbly". The larger fonts aren't awful, but are blurry and don't really compare to the way they looked before. I have freetype and truetype installed for font improvement (which i tried reinstalling several times throughout this), but I'm not sure why the fonts changed so radically after the update.

I have now reverted back to 6.8.2 using official slackware packages (primarily because of the slowdown while switching virtual desktops) but the fonts remain poor. Could anyone explain the way fonts work under Linux in detail? What other libraries could remain from 6.9.0 that are causing the poor fonts to remain even after switching back to 6.8.2?

Any help would be appreciated. I would love to use 6.9.0, but only if I can get it looking as good as 6.8.2 and running as fast.

cheers guys

ok i THINK it's just down to the default X (or possibly Gnome) font rendering engine being unable to apply antialiasing to fonts any smaller than 12. If I just knew where the libraries were I could probably have a play around and fix it - any thoughts?
