problems with debian networkserver

I'm a newbie here and i have 4 computers running on debian sarge.
One of them is a network server for file and Internet sharing and I have 2 problems with this server.
this server was debian woody server installed by someone els but because i'm not always at home and the others sometimes want to make some changes on the server i wanted to install the x-server, and that was problem one, he refused to recognize the graphical interface.
Problem one:
I upgraded it to debian-sarge and there was no problem by upgrading it,
but when i started the server the next day it didn't do what I expected to do. It is now hanging on "setting up Linconf's firewalling rules" and I can't give any commands but my Internet is still working.
then I installed debian sarge on an extra disk to great a new server installation this went all nice and simple but then I got a second problem, he refuses to install the second network card.
This is a digital etherworks 3 DE205, when I tried to install the driver he can't/won't complete is.

My two questions are:
How do I get the server working gain, at least so I can get access to the files that I need.
How do I install the second network card on the new server installation?

I do not know if both of those questions belong in this forum but I hoop you can help me.
For myself it is no problem to work in the command line.

The network card driver should be in your kernel did you try to modprobe it and then does it show up with ifconfig?

If I'm not wrong the card driver should be ewrk3 but if I do modprobe ewrk3 I get the following error.

eth1: region already allocated at 0X0300
eth1: ewrk3_probe() cannot find device at 0X0300
/lib/modules/2.4.27-1-386/kernel/drivers/net/ewrk3.o: init_modules: Input/output error
Hint insmod errors van be caused by incorrect module paraeters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg.
/lib/modules/2.4.27-1-386/kernel/drivers/net/ewrk3.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.27-1-386/kernel/drivers/net/ewrk3.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.27-1-386/kernel/drivers/net/ewrk3.o: insmod ewrk3 failed

and with ifconfig he shows only eth0 and lo and not eth1
maybe I do something wrong but I can't find out what.
