Problems with arts-1.4.2 and libXext-6.4.3 configure

OK, after several days of tryin got figure this out, I'm stumped. I decided to try installing KDE 3.4.2, and, fololowing the recommendations, went to install the arts-1.4.2 library first. After finally solving the x-include problem, it ran up against a brick wall: It can't find the x-libraries! Many suggestions I found don't work. One of them recommended installing libXext-6.4.3. Which runs into another problem that I can't really find an answer for. They mention installing a librbary called (IIRC) xorg-lib-devel, but I can't seem to find it with apt-get. The log and output files for both are upload to www bellsouthpwp net/f/l/fluxxdog/logfiles The specific error messages I get are...

For arts-1.4.2:
Quote:
configure: error: We need a working libXext to proceed. Since configure can't find it itself, we stop here assuming that make wouldn't find them either.
For this, I've got the right directory in the ldconfig config (I really should stop trying to use my memory).

For libXext-6.4.3:
Quote:
checking for xproto x11 xextensions... Package xproto was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xproto.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable No package 'xproto' found
configure: error: Library requirements (xproto x11 xextensions) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.
I can't seem to find any help on the 'xproto.pc' problem.

10 to one says that the 2 problems aren't directly related, but I can easily be wrong. At this point, I ready try almost anything again ^^ Any help I can get is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I have this in my ~/.bash_profile

Code:
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib/pkgconfig
what you see below should be added to your system $PATH --which is usually located in /etc/profile

Code:
:/usr/X11R6/bin

Thumbs down Follow-up: no success

Well, I checked out the ~/bash_profile, and this is all that was working. The rest was commented out:
Code:
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
    . ~/.bashrc
fi
I added the export line

/etc/profile had this:
Code:
if [ "`id -u`" -eq 0 ]; then
  PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11"
else
  PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games"
fi

if [ "$PS1" ]; then
  if [ "$BASH" ]; then
    PS1='\u@\h:\w\$ '
  else
    if [ "`id -u`" -eq 0 ]; then
      PS1='# '
    else
      PS1='$ '
    fi
  fi
fi

export PATH

umask 022
I added the /usr/X11R6/bin directories to the end of the PATH= lines. Configure is still a no go on both arts-1.4.2 and libXext-6.4.3 Any other advice? Thanks!

Exclamation Problem fixed

Well, it took some tinkering, but I managed to find my solution after some experimenting. I tried installing a couple of libXext packages I found with apt-get. The two that fixed my problem: libxext6-dbg (which is more a debugging tool, so it probably wasn't what fixed it) and libxext-dev (the development tools for libXext, more than likely the real fixer). Both were originally uninstalled, and I installed them both. Anyone else with similar problems to mine night want to try these.

Thanks for the help you gave! And hopefully this'll help someone else. Later!
