Problems w/ installing .bin files (StarOffice)

I am having problems w/ installing StarOffice-- it is a .bin file. I parsed through the documentation on the Sun site and all it says is to run the install file. A simple d-click or open does nothing. I try to execute it from the command line & nothing. I looked in all my linux manuals and there is nothing on executing .bin files. Are .bin files archives-- what is the command to unpack & what is the syntax? Is it a file that needs to be compiled? If so, what is the command and syntax? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

I'd expect you'd have to change the permissions before it will let you execute it.
Easy way to do it:

chmod 777 file
./file

I think there'd be instruction somewhere on how to do this in the documentation, but the chmod step is easy to miss and this will throw you.
