problems w/ expect....."./configure"

i can't get expect to install on my computer. i'm trying to write some scripts using expect. however i went got the Unix version for my linux servers. downloaded, untared, and tried "./configure" to get my "makefile" so i could install.......only it's like my machine won't even recognize the "./configure" command. probably a problem on the linux side versus the expect side, but still any help would be appreciated.
