problems viewing avi/mpeg/misc movie files

I recently installed fedora 8 as a clean install on my computer. I previously had fedora 7 and everything worked great. After installing I had a few problems playing sound and all but 1 seem to have been worked out. I cannot hear any sound when listening to divx, xvid, or other encoded types of movie files. I will try and list as comprehensive as possible all the steps I took to resolve this so far:

1. installed vlc via "yum install vlc"
2. installed xine via "yum install xine"
3. installed divx codec falling these instructions to the T: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-...eam-files.html
4. installed mplayer via "yum install mplayer"
5. installed ffmpeg via "yum install ffmpeg"

In the past "yum install vlc" has been all I have needed to do. One thing I have thought of but am not sure exactly how to do is to try and manually build vlc from source using some switch to designate that it will include libraries for other codecs. Any and all thoughts appreciated.

This might sound stupid but from your question it seems you can see the movies (which is good) but can not hear any sound so answer me this...
are you able to hear any sound at all, I mean from any other files not limited to the movies?

I probably should have specified. Everything else works perfectly, I can play mp3's through xmms, I can watch videos on youtube without problem, I even get the occasional bell as an error message pops up. I can see video on MOST video files but I cannot hear sound on any of them.
