problems upgrading glib library

I'm installing the Wellenreiter Wireless scanning software and upgrading my version of glib from v1.2 to v2.x to that required by one of its dependency programs - the Accessibility Tool Kit (atk)

I have compiled and installed the newer glib version but during compilation of atk it stills thinks I have the older version of glib.

I have two directories under /usr/lib namely /glib and /glib2.0 with one file in each. I have edited /etc/ and added the /usr/lib/glib2.0 entry and re-ran ldconfig to update the library cache. However atk still fails on the ./configure and instructs me to upgrade glib to >=2.0.0.

I'm new to this so missing something somewhere for sure.

Any suggestions?
