problems setting up MIDI music in KMid

In KMid, I can't use the MIDI Setup option in the Settings menu. The error message says, ""Could not open /dev/sequencer to get some info. Probably there is another program using it." I certainly don't have a MIDI sequencer running that I know of. How can I figure out what's (supposedly) using /dev/sequencer and shut it down?

Also, if I try to open a MIDI file with KMid, it says "[file] is not a regular file" for every MIDI file I have that I try to open. I don't think so! These files always played fine in Windows Media Player.

I'm a collector and listener of MIDI music, and I'm quite disappointed with Linux in this matter, because getting it to play MIDI files has been a pain in the ***. Haven't found a program yet that can run them with my distro (MEPIS 7).

Nope, I gave up. Maybe Ubuntu somehow supports MIDI files better.
