problems patching/compiling vim7.2

hello.

as the title suggests, i'm trying to compile vim7.2. i downloaded the source as well as the 7.2.001-100 patch file. i put the patch file in the build directory, and then i type "patch -p0 < 7.2.001-100". however, i end up getting quite a few "hunk failed" errors. is there something i'm fundamentally doing wrong, or what? it's hard to imagine that the official patch files for vim are simply unable to work.

oh, and please do not reply with anything remotely close to "why not just install vim from the repositories?"; i'm trying to COMPILE vim.

Well, I won't ask you why you are trying to compile Vim rather than installing the binary packages, but I do feel compelled to ask why you are bothering to patch 7.2 now that 7.3 is considered in beta and is available via Mercurial.

You have a good point. I guess I'm just bothered by my apparent inability to properly apply the patches. I mean, because I get so many errors, I infer that this problem may not be specific to vim7.2. I'd just like to know if there are any relatively common things that could lead to this sort of behavior --- e.g. could it be that I'm using a bad version of patch? Could it be that I need a patch for patch itself? Maybe some files in the vim72 build directory need to be moved and/or renamed? etc... I'm sure neither the patchfile nor my copy of the vim72 source is corrupted.
