Problems installing WordPress on Ubuntu 12.04

Is there someone there who has installed WordPress on Ubuntu Server 12.04 64 bit and not encountered errors or at least found an easy way round it?

When I installed WordPress on my host all I did was to unzip the files, create a database and run the installer nothing could be easier. But on my home server no matter what I do I hit against some permission barrier. Yes I can get is up and running but try to imports something in to it or run certain plugins and I get no where.

I have tried the Ubuntu step by step installation HERE the only thing different is LAMP is already installed. But using this method I get this error
Code:
Neither /etc/wordpress/config-merciadragon.net.php nor /etc/wordpress/config-net.php could be found.
Ensure one of them exists, is readable by the webserver and contains the right password/username
I tried installing Habari but that would not read the docs folder even though I gave it 777 permissions.

Is it me or is it Ubuntu? Why can't it just install like it does on my host we are both running Linux?

Robert...

The files referenced in your error I do not recoginize, these are not the usual locations or file names for the wordpress config files.

You should have a directory structure of something like:

wp-content
wp-admin
etc..

Then you will have your main config file of wp-config.php inside of that main directory. You should never have any web content in your /etc/ directory, I think you have either a bad version of WordPress or you are putting the files in the wrong location.
