Problems installing RPMs in Mandriva LE2006

ok, heres my problem...I installed Mandriva LE2006 this morning...(it took me 2 tries...first try gave me problems with the libconf file at the end of the install and forced me to restart)...I am relatively new to Nix, but I know enough to understand it...only thing I dont know is command line...

Well, when I installed the second time, Nix went to install Nautilus File Manager(i am running GNOME GUI) and failed...so after install finished, i went into the program that lets you configure packages and tried to install it that way...didnt work, said that there were bad signatures in the RPM file)...so I have no file browser and I cannot access any of my drives(i go to access a cd in the cdrom drive and it tells me "canot display location file:///mnt/cdrom" and that there is no default action asociated with this location)

I can browse my home folder from the command line, but I cant click on the home icon and bring up the folder itself because I get the same message as the CDROM...anyone know how to fix this?

Also, I have the tar file for Nautilus, but no clue how to unzip/install it through command line...can someone give me instructions on what commands to type into command line for this?

Thanks,
Brian

The 2006 edition is still beta. You might try going to the 2005LE if you want a more stable release.

At the command-line, type "man tar" if you want info on how to extract tarballs. You can get an idea of different bash commands and their usage from here as well.

i had LE2005 installed, upgraded from it this morning with a clean install, since I recently installed a second hdd for storage...I had read that the release of LE2006 i have is the last beta(and probably the final version) of it..I downloaded RC2 Final...

another question: my partitions are set up as follows

hda(primary hdd, 6gb): /usr, swap file(700mb)
hdd(secondary hdd, 6gb): /home

would that have any effect on my ability to access these files??

Did you try the KDE desktop? It's the default for Mandriva. Could be there is still some problems with the latest gnome in their RPM's.

Your drives shouldn't have an effect on your drive access unless there's some sort of conflict. Are you able to browse CD's contents from the command-line?

Code:

cd /mnt/cdrom
ls

I'm running 2005 LE with KDE 3.3.2, and it's very very stable. I did have a problem similar to that one though in Mandrake 10.1, and I couldn't fix it because it was some kind of bug that required an update, and of course updates for Mandrake 10.1 are no longer supported, only the Mandriva releases have updates now. Just try running the software update.

dudeman: I dont have an internet connection to this box...thats one problem I did have with LE2005...couldnt get my cable internet set up....mandriva will detect me NIC(onboard Realtek 8180 i think) but I have no connectivity to the modem...and I tested the cable, modem, etc wit a winderz box, and it all works...

Ion, i can do that, but its a pain in the arse...i am so used to Nautilus in gnome and kde that I would really like to install it..

You seem to know what you're talking about but just out of curiosity do you have your network card configured correctly? You may to assign yourself a static IP address or set it up to run on DHCP depending. Just double check all your network settings. I've never used DSL or a cable modem, I'm on my college LAN so I'm just making some simple suggestions, a lot of times I have had problems because I overlooked the little things.

i can try and set up a static IP, but I am running Comcast Cable internet...they dont seem to like static IP setup...tried it in windows and had limited connectivity...would only send data and not recieve
