problems installing mysql

im on redhat 8, trying to install the rpms for mysql. i get this error:
error: Failed dependencies:
perl-DBI is needed by mysql-3.23.52-3
perl-DBD-MySQL is needed by mysql-3.23.52-3
perl(CGI) is needed by mysql-3.23.52-3
perl(DBI) is needed by mysql-3.23.52-3

so i install the DBI module from CPAN. I already have perl(cgi) installed b/c i just did that a few weeks ago so i could run CGI scripts on Apache. So even tho i have perl-DBI and perl(CGI) installed it seems to think i dont. Also when i try to install perl-DBD-MySQL
error: Failed dependencies:
perl-DBI is needed by perl-DBD-MySQL-2.1017-3
perl(DBI) is needed by perl-DBD-MySQL-2.1017-3

-somehow even tho i installed perl-DBI it isnt recognized, anyone know y or what im doing wrong?

i have installed it, but i whenever i start it up to test this happens:
<oo7:Mon Jul 07> sudo safe_mysqld --user=mysql &
[1] 8394
<oo7:Mon Jul 07> Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
030707 20:57:10 mysqld ended

so i look at the logfile, and i see this:
030707 21:28:19 mysqld started
Cannot initialize InnoDB as 'innodb_data_file_path' is not set.
If you do not want to use transactional InnoDB tables, add a line
to the [mysqld] section of init parameters in your my.cnf
or my.ini. If you want to use InnoDB tables, add to the [mysqld]
section, for example,
innodb_data_file_path = ibdata1:10M:autoextend
But to get good performance you should adjust for your hardware
the InnoDB startup options listed in section 2 at
030707 21:28:19 /usr/libexec/mysqld: Can't find file: './mysql/host.frm' (errno: 13)
030707 21:28:19 mysqld ended
i found host.frm, it is located elsewhere, so i copied it into the /usr/libexec/ directory hoping that would help, but it didnt. any ideas?
