Question Problems running emerge in VLOS 1.1

I'm new to linux, and I just installed VLOS 1.1 on my computer, but whenever I try to emerge something, I get this error:
!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

So far I've tried deleting my portage tree, and running emerge --sync, which was promising at first, but now I'm back with this message. I'm lost, can anyone help me sort this out? (please keep in mind that I'm completely new at this)
Thanks

Code:
ls -FGg /etc/make.profile
This may fix it;
Code:
# rm /etc/make.profile
# ln -sn /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.1 /etc/make.profile
# emerge --metadata
no guarentee's your using vos with gentoo's emerge. Its not pure gentoo it is a mix match.
But it is a good way to learn.Just wait untill you do an update and then run
etc-update
you can have like 100 files to update.Just use the new one's unless it is something like /etc/fstab
have fun

Thanks to the tips,it looks like I am able to emerge openoffice now at least without any problems yet.
I ran the code above, but ten minutes or so after I started the emerge --metadata, I got this:

>>> Updating Portage cache... /!!! Cannot resolve a virtual package name to an ebuild.
!!! This is a bug, please report it. (virtual/libintl-0)

Is this something that I should be worried about?
