Exclamation Problems compiling stuff

Hi, im fairly new to linux, and have had loads of trouble installing software. At first i thought it was just because i was doin it wrong but the last few progs i have tryed to compile have said basicly the same thing. >

checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.
[root@localhost mpeg2dec-0.1.7]#

Can anyone tell me what up, wether its me that messin up or the compiler.

it's probably that you don't have your development packages with the
header files installed. those are necessary to compile stuff.
look in your package tool program for the "development" stuff.
should be a bunch.
