Problems Compiling proftpd [RESOLVED]

I have been trying to compile proftpd. The configure script works fine and correctly identifies it should use gcc in the build process. However, when I run make it uses gcc for to compile the first files then sunddenly attempts to use cc and dies:
Code:
cc -O2 -Wall -c cap_alloc.c -o cap_alloc.o
make[1]: cc: Command not found
make[1]: *** [cap_alloc.o] Error 127
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/proftpd-1.2.9/lib/libcap'
make: *** [dirs] Error 2
I'm not sure whether this is a bug or not. Can anyone give me any indications on how to correct this. One method that works is manually compiling each file that fails with gcc. But there must be something in one of the make files that I can change.

Do the INSTALL or README docs mention any of this? If not a quick and ugly solution is creating a symbolic link. cd to /usr/bin and type ln -s gcc cc

Thanks for the reply.

I made the sym link like you suggested and it compiled fine. I checked the INSTALL and README files however there was no mention. I guess it is just a bug, I'll be sure to let them know about it.
