problems after upgrading X

Last night, I did a mass upgrade (just about everything in Mandrake Update) including XFree86 - three different packages if i recall correctly. The upgrades went without a hitch.

This morning, my wife logs into her account and asks me, "Why did you remove all of my applications?" Dumbfounded, I reboot and now X won't start - error messages indicate that there are screens specified but there are no usable configurations.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check the X*.0.log found in /var/log and look for lines that begin with (EE) indicating serious errors. Does Mandrake overwrite your config files (specifically XF86Config-4 or xorg.conf in /etc/X11)? If so you will have to reconfigure X.

Also make sure graphics third part drivers (Nvidia or ATI usually) are compatible with the X version you're running. ATI drivers do *not* work with X.org 6.8.x at this time.

Hakan,

I checked the log file and here are the error messages:

Xkboptions requires a string value

Failed to initialize NVIDIA kernel module

unloading [various modules]

Its XFree86 v4.3.0, X protocol v11, r0, release 6.6

Thanks,

Ok, upgraded NVIDIA drivers to 6629 and everything is working fine.

Thanks,

Perry
