problem with xterm


i have a server runing with RHEL 4 U 5
i have VNC (vnc-server-4.0-11.el4)runing on the server

I have a problem when i start the VNC session as a user, i am not getting a terminal.

When i issue the command xterm & at prompt i get the below error

[appascl@xyz apps]$ xterm &
[1] 24202
[appascl@opn08 apps]$ xterm: Error 32, errno 2: No such file or directory
Reason: get_pty: not enough ptys

[1]+ Segmentation fault xterm
Segmentation fault

could you please help in resolving this issue.

Note: VNC is working fine for root.

Run the command with strace:

strace xterm &

let it stop, and scroll back a few frames to see what is going on in the stack. This will usually give enough clues to solve the problem. Don't worry if the strace output doesn't make sense to you. Just try to understand the parts you can, like file names, and you should be able to fix it. It sounds like a permissions issue.
