Problem with winmodem and Packard Bell laptop

Hello
I've a PB Easy-One DC1700 CD, equipped with an internal Agere (was Lucent) winmodem: I've tried to use the driver found on linmodem homepage: I compile, install and load the modem driver correctly, the modem is found and used to dial, but it can't get on with the handshaking process: the modem sends 9 LCP configReq but then, after the timeout nothing happens: the modem hang off.
Querying the modem works, the Initialization string is correct, and besides, just changing the winmodem with an external hard modem, makes the connection working properly: any of you have already encountered (and hopefully solved ) this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Giustiniano
