Problem with thunderbird profile

In order to upgrade a system I made a backup of a thunderbird profile folder. No that the upgrade is done, I want to place the profile back and start using it again. However, when I do that thunderbird does show me all folders that are in the profile, but not the messages that are in the folder. Does anyone know how I can get the messages back in the folders? Or how I can copy those messages to a new profile?
