It compelet installation and successfully update the software. Then the system reboot asked me which oprating system I want to start. I selected Suse linux. Then I got only black screen. Then I thought the problem might be with the monitor configration as I am unable to see the GUI. I did the following to solve the problem.

1. clicked CTR-ALT-F1 to get the Dos like command prompt. I got it signed as a root with my root passward.
2. typed startx
I got the following error and warning message.

please consult the x.org foundation support at startx webpage for help

Xlib:connection to "0.0" refused by server
xlib: invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key given up
xinit:unable to connect to x server

Then I read FAQ on the above page and got recommendaion for the error. I did what suggested and typed startx -- :1

Possibly you may need to install a driver for your video card. What video card are you using?

I'm having exactly the same problem, however whenever I boot into SUSE 10.0 Failsafe, log in and type startx -- :1
It loads into kde with no problems and then runs fine untill I try to log out or reboot. When I do I just get the blank screen again and have to hit the power button.

I have worked out that the problem is with Xorg. however I cant see why as it is the same version as in SUSE 9.3 which had no problems.....

# sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx -b /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/profiles/firegl -i

After this execute the "fglrxconfig" command, answering a lot of questions (the most have to be anwerded as default).

At the end reboot the PC and everything should work well.

init: could not open file: /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/profiles/firegl at /usr/share/sax/init.pl line 971.

Here we go... I worked it out.
Run the SUSE installation but choose Install without ACPI and that will fix it!

You may use ACPI, actually, but for that you need to give to the installation specific cheat codes to boot with.
On very complex main boards it's recommended to use "pollirq" bootoption
