Problem with sound in games - SDL_mixer?

I'm having trouble getting sound to work in games, that worked allright before I installed my new distro. Sound is allright in general (xmms) so i'm guessing its a library thing. It seems to come and go strangely enough.

I'm not using ALSA, just free OSS.

I recently installed SDL 1.2.7 and SDL mixer 1.2.5, maybe I botched this somehow? Freeciv runs, but without sound. Foobillard (top game ) just crashes out with an SDL segfault...

Any help appreciated,
