Problem with setting up email accounts in Thunderbird

Hello everyone

Can anyone help with some suggestions as to how I can configure Thunderbird to accept my POP3 email accounts.
One account is a wanadoo.co.uk address the other is a btinternet.com address. I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

I have tried to manually configure the accounts and a couple of times managed to download some emails from both accounts, however after logging off and then logging back on I just get a lot of error messages and have to try to set the accounts up again. I am using the correct passwords for the accounts( but get message saying passwords are incorrect ?) , I have tried changing the ports from incoming 110 and outgoing 25, to others suggested, infact I have,I think, tried almost everything. Even uninstalling Thunderbird and reinstalling thunderbird.....no luck.

I have read so many pages of tips on how to set thing up but nothing is working

Help and advice would be appreciated

Regards

Did you tick a "remember my password" (or similar) box? What are the exact errors?

Hi Snark1944

Sorry for not getting back before.

I originally ticked the box remember password. I initially got this message - Mail server does not support secure authentication or you have entered an incorrect password. Please check your password, or turn off secure authentication in the account settings for your mail server. I made sure secure Authentication was turned off as suggested and checked my password was correct, still could not set email account up.

Since first trying to set up my email accounts I have changed their passwords. I have uninistalled Thunderbird and started from scratch, I leave the remember password box unchecked but I get a message saying I have entered and incorrect username/password...but I have checked several times and I am using correct username and password , is it possible that my original passwords are being retained in the system and even reloading thunderbird does not get rid of the original settings....does that make any sense?

I have now managed to set up a new email account using a different email client, although still a pop and smtp and have not had any problems, but I would like to get to the bottom of my original problems

Thanks
Heidiho

No worries :)

Right, if you turned off secure authentication, then I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't access your email - because you're essentially saying that you're not going to give the server a password. So you would almost certainly want secure authentication on.

It is possible that thunderbird has retained your settings after you uninstalled them. If you look in your home folder (for me this is '/home/joshua', because my user account is called 'joshua') then there should be a hidden folder either with 'thunderbird' or 'mozilla' in the title. If you rename these to something else (so you still have the folder, but Thunderbird won't be able to find it) then it will effectively have removed any personal data you had.

Hope this helps,
