problem with rpm


[root@dominique root]# rpm -iv xerces-j-1.4.4-2.noarch.rpm
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm
[root@dominique root]#



can anybody explain this please

Hi..

Check the ownership for /var/lib/rpm directory. it should rpm:rpm.

and owner of the df files should be root.

they are, but i dont see the point, I will be root when i give that command so it shouldnt matter right?????????
