Problem with Pidgin on Ubuntu 8.10 Keeps closing.

I have recently started to have some problems with Pidgin instant messenger I can open the program just fine but than when i go to scroll down my buddy list using either the slider bar or the scroll wheel on my mouse the program will just randomly close on me. I found that the same problem occurs using empathy or other instant messenger applications, when I open Empathy as soon as it opens the program close. Whats going on and how do i fix this. but Kopete works just fine haven't had a problem with it. And for the longest time Pidgin was working fine till i would say about a week ago than the problem fix its self for a little while and now its starting up again and its pretty annoying ha ha.

Please Help!!

Yep I have uninstantiated and reinstalled via the synaptic manager and the problem still persisted. Currently Pidgin is working just fine but I am sure that in time it will randomly close again. The problem seems to stop and than randomly come back. Is there something wrong in code or something with my system?

Open pidgin from within a terminal - hopefully, when it crashes, the output in the terminal may give you a clue.

If you have strace installed (and if you don't, then perhaps you should) you can launch pidgin from the terminal:

$ strace -o pidgin.txt pidgin

This will launch pidgin and have the ouput directed to a text file, pidgin.txt, which should also provide clues as to why it's misbehaving.

cheers,

Thanks Mrclisdue I will do that and find any thing that doesn't seem right I will post it here and ask more questions.

Thanks

alright I opened it up through terminal and this is what I got for a message back

# strace -o pidgin.txt pidgin
GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)

What can I take away from this message I am guessing that it is having trouble configuring please bare with me for I am a Ubuntu/Linux n00b.

Thanks
