problem with gtkpod installation(libs in wrong spot)

when i try and configure the intallation i get this error:

checking for PACKAGE_LIBS...
Package libgpod-1.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libgpod-1.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'libgpod-1.0' found
configure: error: ***
See `config.log' for more details.
root@darkstar:~/gtkpod-0.99.4#

i know where my libs are they are in /usr/local/lib so how do i get teh configuarion to look there or be pointed there?

Code:
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH
rerun configure and all should be fine.
