Problem with game gl-117

This game always worked fine until today. Nothing happened when I launched from KDE and I got this output when i launched from terminal:

htpc@linux:~> gl-117
Info: Found gl-117 data directory /usr/share/games/gl-117
Info: Startup gl-117, V1.3 ...
Info: Loading /home/htpc/.gl-117/conf
Info: Saving /home/htpc/.gl-117/conf
Info: Loading /home/htpc/.gl-117/conf.interface
Info: Saving /home/htpc/.gl-117/conf.interface
Info: Using SDL and GLUT
Info: Using SDL_mixer
Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)

I don't think I made any changes to my system since the last time I played it. I messed around with tv tuner settings but that is about it.

I'll suggest that you had an audio application runnning (eg listening to music / watching TV) when you started gl-117.
gl-117 was unable to get audio working so quit.
I expect there is a solution to this, but I haven't found it.

I've got same problem - when started from konsole, got the same message (with slight variations).

have you found a workaround yet?

Yes, make sure you are not running another application that needs the soundcard when you start gl-117.
If you are using KDE, it helps if you set Sound-> Sound system -> aRTs "Autosuspend if idle for 1 sec"
No doubt there is something you can configure that lets you have more than one sound source at a time, but with my cheap on-board sound hardware this does not seem to be possible.

Please see my previous post. Try setting it to 1 second.
Setting it to 0 always gives me "Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)"

Well, that's not very informative.
You need to be methodical, logical, and pay attention to error messages.
I am fairly certain you are getting "Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)"
because gl-117 cannot access sound.
From your first post:

Something is grabbing the sound and is preventing gl-117 from getting it.

Some things you might try:

Look in your system tray (Probably bottom right of your "Panel", Yes?): Do you have something sitting there (eg TV, music player etc) that could be holding onto sound? If so, shut it down.

Get a list of running processes, ls -Al and look carefully at the process names, are any of them likely to be holding on to sound? Eg do you see mplayer, totem, amarok, tv-something in that list?

Try running alsaconf as root
