Problem with ftp access

Hi,

Firstly I am a newbie, so I apologise for this question but I have tried numerous things but to no avail.

I am running SuSE 10. I am trying to ftp a website to my webserver. The web directory has been setup and I have created a vhosts.d entry for this site. I am unsure how to set the access rights for a user to this web directory only.

I created a username by doing the following:

useradd -d /srv/www/htdocs -s /bin/false test
passwd test

chmod 770 /srv/www/htdocs

When I try to connect to the server via FTP with the username and password I created it doesn't connect.

Any Ideas?

What have you tried?

Doesn't connect how? failed login or can't start the connection?

I'm assuming that your running VSFTP, is the service up and running?
In the conf file are you allowing local users to logon?
Is your firewall running/blocking the connection?
Have you verified that you can log in with another user that can login with a shell or with anonymous?
It looks like you changed your directory rights to 770, which is full access for the owner and group only, is your user the owner or in the group? (you may need to chown and chgrp)

Hi,

I use Coffecup ftp software from a Win XP machine, the logon bar just keeps on running across the screen but never connects. If I use another username with no rights it immediately states that I don't have access. If I access another webdirectory on the same server that we have used before with the original username and password used when the directory was created it still works.

FTP is up and running. I recieved a few steps to follow from the person who originally setup the server for me. Here they are:

1. under /srv/www/vhosts/ Create the directory example test.org
2. useradd -d /srv/www/vhosts/test.org -s /bin/false user
3. passwd user
4. chmod /srv/www/vhosts/test.org
5. rcapache2_reload

Hope this helps
