problem with apt-get install dovecot-postfix


hi, so I installed apt-get install dovecot-postfix
this is the telnet localhost 25 dialog:
miles@erific:~$ telnet localhost 25

what am Idoing wrong? I want the smtp auth to work.

please tell me if I'n way of base here or not. this article said that postfix and dovecot is now configured to be integrated and configured for smtp auth. the article is: http://ubuntuserver.wordpress.com/20...x-integration/
p.s. the os is ubuntu 10.4 desktop. Idid do apt-get update first.

You need to do a bit more configuring. There is a great tutorial "http://workaround.org/ispmail/lenny/preparing-the-system" You will need to look around at previous pages to see the sort of set up he uses. Postfix has the ability to use Dovecot authorisation of clients, but it has to be told to. The tutorial is based on Debian Lenny, but should be very easily adapted

Are you going to be storing your user database in /etc/passwd, some other files, LDAP, or an SQL database? Software needs to know.
