Problem with Apache compilation

I've been trying to build apache by following the Apache Compile HOWTO, but keep getting stuck in section 3.4.1. Assuming the commands are to be run from the apache_... Directory, I always get the following error which leads to an empty Makefile for apache itself:

sed: -e expression #46, char 56: Unknown option to 's'

My situation is pretty much the same as the one described at this site . The main differences are that I'm using the stable version of Debian GNU/Linux, woody. The posts on that page allude to a DHCP issue (which I am using in conjunction with a cable modem) but I don't understand how this figures in the whole "thicket" of issues with APACI, the Makefile template, etc.

This may all sound a bit confusing but I'd really like to salvage what I've already got, so I'd be grateful if someone could help me out here.

I decided to try it this way because I've had bad experiences with package installs in that they'll put apps in non-standard directrories and make it generally more difficult to do custom compilation stuff, i.e. most HOWTOs will expect apache somewhere in /usr/local/ and not /var/www/ or so.

I'm really looking to do something very close to the Apache Compile Howto. If there's a way to do this with debian packages, I'd be grateful if someone could point me to a guide.
