problem while dual booting ubuntu and xp

My friend recently installed ubuntu to his existing computer which had windows XP. Today when he tried to start the PC it showed the error

Code:

grub error
reason: uknown filesystem
grub rescue

I searched around and tried the comaand to reinstall grub

Code:

sudo grub-install

but it is saying that it is an unkown command. Please tell me what to do

What version of Ubuntu? (The later versions use GRUB-2, and the install command may be different.)

Did Ubuntu work after installation? If so, was anything else changed?

If possible, boot up from the Ubuntu CD, open a terminal, and run "sudo fdisk -l". Post the results here.

He is using Lucid.It worked well for a day, and ubuntu crashed while he was burninig a disk. After that he is getting the error. I'll try to get and upload the output as soon as possible
