Problem starting X

I use Ubuntu 5.04 on AMD Athlon64 processor. Recently, I downloaded XFree86-4.50 from xfree86.org. After installing the binaries, when I ran XFree86 -autoconfig, I got the following error:

XFree86: /lib/lib.so.6: version 'GLIBC_2.3.4' not found (required by XFree86)

So, I installed glibc-2.3.4. But, I still get the above error. The install directory for glibc-2.3.4 is /usr/local/glibc-2.3.4.

Please help.

You should only use the package manager to install and upgrade packages (like synaptic or aptitude on Ubuntu). When you manually build packages from source tarballs, you might not get all the correct dependencies, as is the case in your post, apparently. Also, you will have problems when you want to remove or upgrade manually-built packages, and they could interfere with packages installed by the package management system.
