Problem running pppd on Redhat Linux EL 3.0

We have an application that runs pppd to a remote server using a modem. This application has worked on previous version of Redhat Linux. We have tested it on 8.0, 9.0 and AS2.1 (64-bit). We now must support EL 3.0 (64-bit) and am running into problems. When we issue the following command:

/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 115200 -detach user xxx password xxx linkname modem ipcp-accept-remote noccp novj noipx

We get this error:

Couldn't get channel number: Bad address

Any help is appreciated
