problem running KPPP under AT

My user runs KPPP (SetUID) in interactive sessions and wants to be able to schedule it forward to an unattended time using AT. The scripts to do this are all set up and fire appropriately when called (including the custom script that KPPP is normally fired successfully from). But under AT's control KPPP itself just does not fire?

As AT uses the user's native environment (same UID and effective-ID and PATHs), it is difficult to understand this behaviour. Nor does it seem to be problems with locking. It feels like one of those tricky permissions problem -- i.e. nothing happens -- but I cannot think where it applies?

The kppp log says: "cannot connect to Xserver"

Someone may have struck this perhaps?

The deafening silence tells me the answer is perhaps to not use a GUI-dialler like KPPP, but something like EZNET (setting option 'chat=no' to invoke the now more common PAP/CHAP scenario). My pennyworth if anyone is interested!
