Problem playing Audio CD's on Linux mdk

Hi,

I'm running Linux mdk 9.2 on a gateway 310X. Whenever I try to play Audio CD's the totem application seems to work, but any other application line xmms or kscd will display the cd information and the bar will move, but no sound. If the audio cd is somehow "muted". How do I check? I looked at aumix, alsamixer, and kmix and they said that nothing is muted (and totem plays audio cd's just fine).

Please advise on what configuration files I should looka t to see what totem is doing right and xmms is doing wrong. I'd rather play audio cds using xmms than totem.

Regards,
AR

I assume that you can play MP3s or other music digital but nust not music CDs Do other system sounds work correctly?

Is this the latest version of xmms?

From looking at totem's home page it appears to be capable of digital audio extraction. Kscd is not but the latest version of xmms is. Digital audio extraction does not need an audio cable between the CDROM drive and the sound card. I would guess your PC does not have an audio cable.

Go download the latest version of xmms and see if that works.

yep, probably a missing audio cable..

xine will also play audio cd's, using raw data, so doesn't need the audio cable...

Hi,

So I compiled xmms from source tarball (couldn't do the binary of the latest as I had way too many dependency problems) from www.xmms.org. It compiled and installed nicely, and ran properly, BUT STILL NO AUDIO FROM AUSIO CD'S!!!

Do I have to do something to the preferences dialog so as to tell xmms NOT to try to read audio from the nonecistent audio cable but do digital audio extraction like totem or xine??

Please do let me know.
