Generally speaking, you need the root password to install software. It is sometimes possible to install under your own user's directory, but it is neither simple, nor advisable.
Since you do not have the root password, it seems reasonable to conclude that you are not the system administrator, further suggesting that you are using a work or school system (or similar). There is probably a mechanism to request the installation of a program. You should use this mechanism. |
it's always better to install applications from an X terminal in Debian. Try installing Openoffice from xterm using:
aptitude install openoffice.org then see what messages it gives you there, sometimes it says that some packages are 'kept back'. When that happens just do a aptitude dist-upgrade and see what happens after that. Try installing from xterm and get back to us with what messages it gives there. |
