Problem: installing Quicken 99 basic using wine.

I installed Quicken properly the 1st time I tried but had to install a different distro of Ubuntu, now I can't find what I'm missing.

I have installed and upgraded Ubuntu 9.4, installed and configured wine 1.0.1-0ubuntu to emulate Win-98.

I am trying to install from a Quicken 99 Basic CD mounted at /media/cdrom0. I know I must open a terminal and cd /media/cdrom0.

I think the command to use in terminal is: wine setup.exe

But which setup.exe? There are at least six!
1 each in the following directories:
  1. /canmff/disk1
  2. /canqtax
  3. /dao/disk1
  4. /disk1
  5. /qbtrial/can – (Quickbooks trial Canada so not this one)
  6. /qbtrial/us - (Quickbooks trial US so not this one)

I believe it is the one at /disk1 but I am not certain!
Each time I used the wrong one it didn't record an uninstall log and I had to reinstall the OS twice just to remove faulty installations of Quicken.

So, although I'm somewhat ashamed to ask for help once again, I sure would appreciate a little more guidance. I think I remember seeing someone use the following in a post. “Experience is a hard teacher.” It is indeed!!!

Thanks for taking time to read this

I don't know the answer. I've only used Quicken 2007 under Wine. The redraws are painfully slow, and if I can get KmyMoney working more reliably I'll migrate. But I digress. I have some hopefully useful suggestions.

(1) Mount the CD as a disk "D:" for example using the WineCfg, and then just use setup from the wine command line. Maybe it'll pick the right one

(2) Is there an Autorun file on the CD? It might point to the correct one.

(3) I presume there isn't a setup.exe or "install" in the root directory of the CD.

Thank you for your very helpful post!
I appreciate it so much that I will not yell at you.

GNUcash is a double entry app and I am not an accountant, and I am loathe to go through the learning curve that using it entails. I am a retired senior citizen and might not live long enough to use it proficiently.

I note that you are in Ann Arbor. The last I knew, freedom to choose an OS still existed there. It still exists where I live, and I will be doing all that I am able to see that it will continue to exist for both of us.

Oh, by the way, I will continue to use Linux and a Microsoft OS if that meets your approval.

Thanks again,

Edmond B

Thanks for your response.

I think #1 might work and I will likely try that approach soon.

As for #2, yes there is an autorun and I'll check it.

Your assumption is correct, there is no setup.exe in the root directory.

This little project is being delayed by an unrelated circumstance, so I will mark this 'Solved' for the time being.

Best regards and a sincere thank you,

Edmond B
