problem installing mplayer

I'm trying to install mplayer from source on my Suse 10.0 system. I read from the README doc that I needed gcc-2.95.x. So, I downloaded and installed gcc-2.95.3. When I tried to compile mplayer, I got some assembler output error. I referred the net and found out that I was using the wrong binutils version. I found from the mplayer site that they recommended binutils-2.11.x. So, I downloaded binutils-2.11.2 and installed it. (I compiled the binutils source with gcc-2.95.3). After that, I don't know why but I invoked ldconfig. And then, gcc-2.95.3 stopped compiling any program and always gives the following error:

/usr/lib/libc_nonshared.a(elf-init.oS): In function `__libc_csu_init':
elf-init.oS(.text+0x21): undefined reference to `__init_array_end'
elf-init.oS(.text+0x27): undefined reference to `__init_array_start'
/usr/lib/libc_nonshared.a(elf-init.oS): In function `__libc_csu_fini':
elf-init.oS(.text+0x8c): undefined reference to `__fini_array_end'
elf-init.oS(.text+0x92): undefined reference to `__fini_array_start'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

My /etc/ld.so.conf is:

/usr/X11R6/lib/Xaw95
/usr/X11R6/lib/Xaw3d
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/i486-linux/lib
/usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib=libc5
/usr/i486-linux-libc6/lib=libc6
/usr/i486-linuxaout/lib
/usr/i386-suse-linux/lib
/usr/local/lib
/usr/openwin/lib
/opt/kde/lib
/opt/kde2/lib
/opt/kde3/lib
/opt/gnome/lib
/opt/gnome2/lib
include /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*.conf

Any ideas?? Please help.

i compiled & installed mplayer just fine in slackware using the stock gcc-3.3.6 that is included with slackware.

requiring gcc-2.9.5 ? that could be just an old document in need of being updated/edited by the author of mplayer sources...
