Question Problem installing Java runtime env on machine

hello,
i went to dslreports.com to check my speed and I couldnt run the applet, it said i needed to install jre2 which it brought up and downloaded in mozilla 1.5 that i was using on mandrake 9.1 system. But when download manager finished it said installation failed access denied. I then went java site downloaded the jre2 rpm and installed that. I see it put files in usr/java/1.3.1... Same trouble though when I went to dslreports.com and tried to run speed test. I even put the path to java in the environment variable. Any suggestions on how to install jre2 so i can run Mozilla as regular user and have it function. By the way I also went to the Netscape plugins site 2 check it and it said I dont have java installed yet I know files are in /usr/java.
thanx,
alan

I've recently had java problems when installing Limewire. I found that with my setup (Mandrake 9.2), only Sun's j2re1.4.2_03 rpm worked with my browsers and Limewire. Other versions only worked with one, and some didn't work with either. I think a visit to http://www.java.com is probably what you need.

I got this from the mozilla site, do you have a soft link to the *_oji.so file?

1. Install Java Runtime Environment.
2. Make a symbolic link to libjavaplugin_oji.so in your Mozilla Plugins directory.

yeah I have both a symbolic link in in ~/.mozilla/plugins to the .so file and I downloaded
j2re1.4.2_03 rpm and installed it. I see a directory in /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03 But everytime I go to the dslreports web site and run the spead test it downloads another copy of java2 and trys to install it but fails with a message of "read access" and installation failed. And another thing. I try to run the ControlPanel.html file in /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03 and it says loading and then nothing appears in Konqueror window. Any suggestions?
