Problem installing Java plugin to Mozilla on AMD64

I spent the last few hours just trying to install Java plugin....

Here is my configuration :
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 AS on AMD64
using the Mozilla that comes with the RHEL (version mozilla-1.4.3-3.0.2)

What I tried :
A) first I installed the JDK 1.5 for AMD64, to realize that there are no plugin with
this package! Not documented except that a lot of people are talking about it on other
forums.

B) I installed the JDK 1.5 for i586, then using the plugin for ns7
(YES I KNOW how to install a plugin with doing the soft link with ln -s to the
directory of mozilla's plugin)
This gives the error :
grep: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
cut: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
sed: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Now on some forums they suggest to comment out the line
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
in the file /usr/bin/mozilla
That eliminates the error message, BUT... the plugin is still not working when I look the
"About Plugins".

C) I installed the JDK j2sdk1.4.2_06 and I tried its plugin in ns610-gcc32 since I have gcc 3.2. I get the same behaviour as in B).

D) I tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything. No difference.

HELP!!!!!!

I ran into the same problem.

Here is how I fixed it.

First: insure the link path is fully qualified

ln -s /usr/local/j2re1.4.2/plugin/amd64/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Last: insure the /usr/local/j2re1.4.2/plugin/amd64/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so is executeable

chmod 755 /usr/local/j2re1.4.2/plugin/amd64/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so

When I pulled up mozilla. and used aboutlugins. I now see
Java(TM) Plug-in Blackdown-1.4.2-01

This also worked for firefox

The following link helped me with the install but the main issue was the shared object being executeable:

Regards,

Rich

It works... partially...

OK I did everything as said, it does install the blackdown java 1.4.2, but the java applet I am trying
to execute is the PowerChute for Linux from APC, and as soon as I try the login applet, it fails.
The blackdown java with a
Unexpected Signal : 11 occurred at PC=0x2A95E10ADA
Function=(null)
Library=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so

Problem in the java virtual machine...

SO! Back to square 1 :-)

Thanks anyway!

Daniel
