Problem Installing Gaim 1.5

This my third day at Linux ! So I really dont know much about this.

I installed RH9. Am trying to install the updated version of Gaim which I believe is 1.5. Am getting the following errors while installing:

[asad@localhost downloads]$ rpm -U -vh gaim-1.5.0-0.fc2.i386.rpm
warning: gaim-1.5.0-0.fc2.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID a9464aa9
error: Failed dependencies:
libXss.so.1 is needed by gaim-1.5.0-0.fc2
libaspell.so.15 is needed by gaim-1.5.0-0.fc2
libgtkspell.so.0 is needed by gaim-1.5.0-0.fc2

So how do I proceed from here on ???

It means that libXss.so.1, libaspell.so.15, and libgtkspell.so.0 have to be installed before gaim can be installed. I would go to http://rpm.pbone.net/ (bookmark that page, you'll be back there again) and search for each one by name for your distribution. Just type in "libXss.so.1" and search, it will find an rpm that contains that file. Then do the others. However, I'm not very familiar with redhat, but I think it should have something like "yum" It's a program that will get programs for you and solve the dependencies itself. If you can do it that way, you'll save loads of time and headache. Google "yum and red hat 9.0" and I'm sure you'll find something. Good Luck!

Ok so I searched for yum and found the rpm for it. Now trying to install but getting the following errors:

[asad@localhost downloads]$ rpm -ivh yum-2.0.4-1.rh.fr.i386.rpm
warning: yum-2.0.4-1.rh.fr.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID e42d547b
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

I can't find the libXss.so.1 file for redhat 9 but it is available for red hat 6 ... can the file still be used on RH 9

Sounds like maybe you are not logged in as root. To run rpm's in linux, you will have to be logged in as the root user. To do so, open the terminal, type "su" then press enter....it will then prompt you for your root password....put it in and press enter. Where it says [asad@localhost downloads], it should change to [root@localhost downloads]. You're now logged in as root. Try your rpm again and you should have permission now. Good Luck!
